Hearths

If you have a gas or solid fuel stove such as a wood burning stove, it is a legal requirement to have a hearth installed beneath your stove. These hearths are in place for your protection and can also add aesthetic appeal to your stove and fireplace.

What is a Hearth?

A hearth is essentially a piece of flooring that will go underneath and around your stove or fireplace. The hearth needs to be made from a non-combustible material such as slate, granite, glass, tile, micro-marble or limestone that won’t crack to ensure that your flooring is protected from the heat generated by your stove. Not only does the hearth protect your flooring underneath, but it is also used to protect the stretch of floor in front as heating stoves, especially log burners, commonly tend to spit ember out in front. Therefore, it’s a legal requirement for the hearth to extend by at least 12 inches in front of your stove and solid fuel hearths need to be cut and slabbed, so the hearth can expand when it heats up, preventing it from cracking. Additionally, the extended hearth also protects the occupants and pets around it as by walking around the hearth, you are safe from getting any hot ember on you.

A hearth isn’t just a feature to protect you and your flooring from your stove, it can also be a feature that complements your stoves and helps your fireplace become the gorgeous centrepiece of your home as you can choose a pattern and material that suits your style and home décor.

When do you Need a Hearth?

A hearth is needed with any fireplace that has a gas, multi-fuel, wood burning stove or any other stove that uses solid fuels. Even if you don’t have a fireplace, the hearth still needs to be in place with all these types of heating stoves. If you don’t want to have a hearth in your living room or property due to the lack of space available, then the only heating stove that you can have installed would be an electric stove as these don’t require hearths.
